POD Dancers Shine in NEWDO’s The Nutcracker

This Thanksgiving weekend, two Power of Dance dancers took the stage at the Weidner Center as part of the annual production of The Nutcracker put on by Northeastern Wisconsin Dance Organization (NEWDO). This large-scale performance brings together dancers from studios across the area, along with professional dancers from France, offering students a unique and inspiring experience beyond their home studio.

Participation requires an audition and a significant commitment, with rehearsals held every weekend from September through November. This year, POD dancers Emmalynn Goering and Nadia Mattson embraced the challenge.

Emmalynn, a second-year participant, performed as a Party Girl and Soldier. She auditioned after hearing peers describe how meaningful the experience was, especially dancing alongside professionals. Her favorite role was the older Party Girl, where she enjoyed developing her acting skills and making the role her own. Emmalynn valued the relationships she built and the professionalism she gained, including learning fast costume changes and ballet etiquette. She credits POD’s ballet and pointe training with preparing her technically and helping her confidently pick up choreography.

Nadia, a first-year participant, danced as a Party Girl, Soldier, and Angel. She decided to audition to try something new with a friend from another studio. Her favorite role was Party Girl, thanks to the joyful atmosphere and festive costumes. Nadia loved being part of a production that audiences instantly recognize and shared that her POD training gave her the skills needed to perform a variety of Nutcracker dances. She encourages others to audition for the fun experience and the chance to meet dancers from many studios.

Nadia’s mom, Barb, shared, “Watching Nadia apply all her years of dance to something completely different and step out of her comfort zone has made us so proud. The Nutcracker is such a special holiday tradition.”

At Power of Dance, we are proud to support dancers as they stretch themselves, try new experiences, and grow as artists. Congratulations to Emmalynn and Nadia for representing POD so beautifully—we hope their journey inspires others to take the leap and audition in future years.
