New to Dance? New to POD?

Starting something new can feel exciting—and a little overwhelming. Whether your child is taking their very first dance class or your family is new to Power of Dance, we’re here to make getting started simple. Below are answers to the questions we hear most often from new dance families.

What age can my child start dance?

Children can begin dancing at 2 years old, and it’s never too late to start! We offer age-appropriate classes for preschoolers, elementary students, teens, and even adults. Whether your child is taking their very first dance class or has years of experience, we’ll help you find the perfect fit.

What if my child has never danced before?

Welcome! Many of our students begin with no previous dance experience.

Our beginner classes are designed specifically for dancers who are just starting out. Our instructors know that learning dance is about much more than steps—it’s about building confidence, making friends, and having fun. We create a welcoming environment where every child can succeed at their own pace.

How do I know which classes are best for my child?

If your child is new to dance, start by choosing one to three classes that match their interests and personality. The most important thing during the first year is helping them discover a love of dance while building confidence.

If you’re unsure which styles your child would enjoy, we’d be happy to help! We can recommend classes based on your child’s age, personality, and interests, and even show you videos of each style.

If your child has previous dance experience, we usually recommend continuing in the styles they already enjoy while adding something new. Technique classes like Acro and Leaps, Turns & Jumps are excellent additions that help dancers develop skills more quickly.

One recommendation we almost always make is ballet. Ballet is the foundation of nearly every dance style. It teaches posture, balance, flexibility, body awareness, and proper technique that carries over into jazz, pom, lyrical, contemporary, and even hip hop. That’s why all of our competitive dancers take ballet, and why we encourage recreational dancers to consider adding it as they continue to grow.

If your child is transferring from another studio, we’ll help determine the best class placement. Some classes may require a brief evaluation to ensure your dancer is placed where they’ll be most successful.

How many classes should my child take each week?

One class is a wonderful place to start—but many families quickly discover their dancer wants more!

Think about it this way: most sports practice multiple times each week. Dance is no different. Taking more than one class gives dancers additional opportunities to build strength, coordination, confidence, and technique while experiencing different styles.

Many younger dancers successfully take multiple classes in one evening or on different days. Preschool dancers often enjoy two classes back-to-back, while older dancers frequently combine performance classes with technique classes like Acro or Leaps, Turns & Jumps.

The best schedule is one that fits your family’s routine while giving your child opportunities to grow.

Can my child try a class before enrolling?

Yes! We’d love to meet you.

Each August we host a Free Trial Event, where new families can tour our studio, meet instructors, and participate in sampler classes featuring three different dance styles.

If you miss the event, contact us to ask about current trial opportunities. We’ll do our best to help your child experience Power of Dance before committing to the season.

Do I need to stay while my dancer is in class?

That’s completely up to you!

Many parents choose to drop their dancer off and return at the end of class, while others enjoy relaxing in our comfortable lobby during class time. Our lobby includes seating and video monitors so you can follow along with your dancer’s class.

Are parents allowed to watch class?

Yes! Parents are welcome to watch class through the monitors in our lobby. Our preschool studio also includes a viewing window so you can watch your little dancer without distracting the class.

Our instructors work hard to help dancers become independent and confident, so we encourage families to enjoy watching while allowing students to focus on their teachers and classmates.

What should my dancer wear?

Dancers should wear clothing that allows them to move comfortably while still allowing instructors to see proper body alignment. Hair should always be securely pulled back away from the face, and street shoes should be removed before entering the dance studios.

  • Music & Movement / Dance Expressions: leotard or dance dress, tights, pink ballet shoes
  • Ballet: leotard, pink tights, pink ballet shoes, hair secured in a bun, skirt or fitted shorts optional
  • Acro: leotard or fitted athletic wear, bare feet, no loose or baggy clothing
  • Jazz, Pom and Leaps/Turns/Jumps: leotard or fitted top, dance shorts or leggings, tan tights, tan jazz shoes, pom classes also require white poms
  • Tap: leotard or fitted top, dance shorts or leggings, tan tights, black tap shoes (slip-on preferred for young dancers)
  • Hip Hop: comfortable fitted athletic clothing, clean, non-marking black sneakers
  • Boys: fitted T-shirt, athletic shorts, appropriate shoes for each class

Do you sell dancewear and shoes?

Yes! Our on-site dancewear store carries nearly everything your dancer will need throughout the season, including:

  • Dance shoes
  • Leotards
  • Tights
  • Shorts and dance apparel
  • Hair accessories

Shopping at the studio makes it easy to ensure your dancer has the correct items before class begins.

When does your season start?

Our 2026–2027 dance season begins Monday, August 31, 2026.

While most dancers begin at the start of the season, many classes welcome new students throughout the year as long as space is available. If you’re joining after classes have started, contact us and we’ll help you find the best placement for your dancer.

When does your season end?

Our regular season continues through May, ending with our annual Spring Production.

The location and exact dates of our Spring Production will be communicated to enrolled families early in the season. Dancers in style-based dance classes (pom, jazz, tap, ballet and hip hop) will perform in the recital. Preschool classes perform in one show, and all other classes perform in two shows.

What does the dance season look like?

The first part of the season focuses on building technique, learning new skills, and preparing dancers for choreography. Around November, classes begin learning their recital routines.

Throughout the year families can also look forward to:

  • Costume measuring and ordering in the fall
  • Costume distribution in late January or February
  • Professional class and individual photos in early spring
  • Mutiple Spring Production performances, with most classes performing twice

Our recital is a wonderful celebration of everything dancers have accomplished throughout the season.
